Many of these early Garands were destined for field testing and subjected to rough use and incremental upgrades. It comes with a 5 piece cleaning rod, grease pots, and plastic oiler stored inside the buttstock.Manufactured in April of 1939, this very early M1 Garand rifle would have been in the original "Gas Trap" configuration, which would be retired in favor of the gas port arrangement that would see the M1 through the rest of its service life. It is fitted with a nice matching dark walnut stock and handguard set that has the proper DOD acceptance cartouche on the left side of the stock with a single "P" in the pistol grip area.

It also has the late production front and rear sight set, and it has the correct post-war wide base gas cylinder and square top gas cylinder lock with a contract "BS" marked gas cylinder plug. It is fitted with all the standard late production post-war Springfield Armory "65" series marked parts, that include the bolt assembly, the operating rod and complete trigger group. The breech area of the barrel remains in the white. The barrel is marked "SA F6535448 5 56 A2278", with the faint NM markings on the front left side of the barrel. It has the standard receiver markings over the serial number. Towards the end of the normal M1 Garand production cycle, just prior to switching tooling up for the new M14 rifles, Springfield Armory was using any and all in stock parts and barrels to finish up producing the standard service grade M1 rifles, so its not uncommon to find late 5.8-6 million range production rifles with a various NM marked pats. At the time of production, it was fitted with a late production NM marked barrels dated 1956 however, it is not a full National Match rifle. It is accompanied by a sales receipt indicating that it was sold in 1957 as a private purchase rifle. This example has the "X" marked serial number indicating it was a duplicate serial number. This is an excellent example of a very late post-war production standard service grade Springfield M1 Garand that is fitted with a National Match barrel.
